Porsche built the first model Porsche Spyder 718-RSK in 1957 to compete in the 24hr of Le Mans. The 718 was a development of the successful Porsche 550A with improvements made to the body work and suspension. The car's full name was the 718 RSK, where "RS" stands for RennSport (sports-racing) and the K reflects the shape of the car's revised torsion-bar suspension. It had a mid-engined layout and used the 142 bhp 1.5 litre Type 547/3 quad-cam flat four air-cooled engine introduced in the 550A Spyder. They were raced until 1964 having competed in many different races including Formula 1, winning the European hillclimb championship and Targa Florio. Many famous drivers who have competed in these iconic cars include Sir Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Dan Gurney & Edgar Barth.
As these cars were mainly used for racing, inevitably some were destroyed in crashes so there are only around 16 cars currently remaining. It is extremely rare that these cars come up for auction, but they usually command premiums around £1.7-£4 million.
Above, we can see an original example sold at auction in Los Angeles on the 17th August 2020 for £1.7 million.
Our Spyder 718-RSK replicas / recreations for sale use a GRP body, which was moulded from a genuine original car. It is therefore identical in size and proportion, but uses the more durable GRP rather than aluminium of the original cars, which were prone to dents. The chassis of the original is very similar to our fully space-framed version utilising a mid-engined air-cooled flat four engine similar to the original design.

Most new cars take a huge hit in value especially during the first 3 years. Classic cars generally increase in value. Self-built second hand Spyders 25 yrs old can still be seen advertised for £25,000+. It, therefore, stands to reason that buying one of our much improved superior cars not only represents much better value, but you are unlikely to experience any significant depreciation during the ownership of your car. It is also entirely possible to sell your car on for a profit as we have seen some of our cars up for sale for more than we sell them for. Looking as a long-term investment it would appear that you can have many years of pleasure without losing much in depreciation or running costs.
We have featured in several magazines, newspapers, videos & online photos of our cars. You can buy Total Kit Car by pressing the tab below where you will see a 6-page article on our VW based Spyder 718-RSK. It was also featured on the front cover of the magazine and was one of the cars chosen to be on their stand at Stoneleigh for the Kit Car Show in 2018
